FLOATING DEATH PICNIC
Floating Death Picnic = one man armed with a selection of boxes, dials, devices, a stylophone, a plank of wood and an excitable persona. He makes quirky electronic music whilst dancing, vocalising and interacting with his cheap devices!

Matter 19 May 2010 - LAPTOP FOLK - "The times they are a changing....."

Hey

We wanted to give you a ‘heads-up’ on some of the ideas we will be bringing to next Matter social.

Possible Project – LAPTOP FOLK

This is one the ideas which has really stuck with us over the last month.

LAPTOP FOLK hijacks the informal format of tradition folk music played in pubs and bars.  The guitar, fiddles and banjo’s would be replace with electronic instruments i.e. laptops, synthesisers.  There would be no stage for the performers.  The Musicians would ‘set-up’ in the actual bar/pub itself.  The spectators with be free to inter-mingle with the artist.  Artist could exchange samples/stems/recordings prior to the event, so that everyone can work from the same ‘pallet’.  Alternatively, they could completely adlib, and see what happens?

Just to be absolutely clear this doesn’t mean people playing electronic Irish folk, it's simply the informal format of such events which we want to explore in a different context.

For me this idea raises some interesting questions; how will the audience interact with the artists and their equipment?  How will the artists interact with each other?  What the hell will it sound like? How will it work?  What technical problems will need to be overcome?  What is Folk music?

We would be interested to know people thoughts on this one?

If anyone has any suggestion please let us know either before or at the next matter?

If you would like to get involved in helping us organise this event, or, feel you have something to offer please let us know?

We also want to hear about your ideas?

Please feel free to use the Facebook page and Blog site to share potential ideas with the group.  Alternatively you can email me or Stephen direct, and we will collate any submissions and share them with the group in preparation for the next meeting.

On a similar line; please feel free to use the Facebook page, to advertise and promote any work you might be involved in.  We hope that people will use the page as bit of a sounding board.  Admittedly there aren’t that many members yet. but as the group grows it could become a good resource to exploit!?.....

The Second Matter Social will be held on Wednesday 19 May 2010 @ The Washington.

See you in a couple of weeks

Cheers

Dan
